Kennedy targeted on 1963 Ireland trip
By SHAWN POGATCHNIK
Associated Press Writer
DUBLIN, Ireland - President John F. Kennedy was the subject of three
separate death threats during his visit to Ireland in 1963, according to
newly declassified police documents released Friday.
The documents released by the Irish Justice Department said police received
two anonymous telephoned warnings in the weeks before the arrival of the
United States' first Irish Catholic president. A third threat went to the
newsroom of the Irish Independent newspaper.
Kennedy's June 26-29 visit went ahead trouble free as he was greeted by
adoring crowds in Dublin, Cork, Galway and at his family homestead in
County Wexford, in southeast Ireland.

Minister quits after Trident vote
Malcolm Chisholm has spoken out against Trident
Communities Minister Malcolm Chisholm has resigned from the Scottish
government after voting with the SNP over the replacement of Trident.
He was one of four Labour members who supported the SNP's motion
opposing the replacement of the nuclear submarines.
In his resignation letter, Mr Chisholm said he knew his vote had made
his position untenable.
The Scottish Parliament failed to agree a position on the future of
the Clyde-based fleet.
Mr Chisholm has already spoken out against the UK Government's plans
to replace the nuclear submarines, which are based at Faslane.
A second resignation

Images Show Padilla in Chains, Goggles
MIAMI (AP) - Still video images of alleged terror operative Jose
Padilla in chains and wearing headphones and blacked-out goggles
demonstrate the harsh tactics used by U.S. interrogators while he was in
military custody as an "enemy combatant," his lawyers said in court
papers.
The images, taken from an unclassified Defense Department video, show
Padilla being chained hand and foot and led out of his cell by three
guards dressed in camouflage and wearing riot helmets and visors. The
video images are the first publicly released of Padilla's 3-year
detention at a Navy brig in Charleston, S.C.

Stone Attack Condemned
The murderer and former loyalist icon Michael Stone, who stormed Stormont
today claiming to have a bomb, has been widely condemned.
The loyalist, Ulster Political Research Group (UPRG) said today's meeting of
the Assembly was due to be one of the most important days in the history of
Northern Ireland.
"The Ulster people were waiting anxiously to hear what our political leaders
would say on the many substantive and major issues facing us all for the
first time, and maybe the last, for a long time, to make critical decisions
that would affect our children and their children.
