Religious repression has a way of reappearing later and manifesting itself through hurtful and
destructive attitudes and behaviors, says Dallas Darling.

It never ceases to amaze me how some in the Religious Right are keen on playing their divisive
and dogmatic cards, especially around election time. If it is not the race card, then it is
usually the religion card. (One could also mention cards such as immigration, welfare,
evolution, prayer in public schools, Islamaphobia, military service, genocide, etc…). Perhaps
this is due to their Puritan Fathers who banned the real paper playing cards declaring them to
be sinful. Religious repression has a way of reappearing later and manifesting itself through
hurtful and destructive attitudes and behaviors.

Therefore, it was no surprise when the Religious Right’s James Dobson accused Sen. Barack Obama
of “distorting the Bible” and pushing a “fruitcake interpretation” of the US Constitution.
Dobson, leader of the ultra-conservative Focus on the Family, was referring to Obama’s
observation that Americans’ practice many different types of Christianity. He also questioned
how one should interpret biblical passages condoning slavery and making eating shellfish an
abomination. Obama really raised the ire of the Religious Right when he said the Sermon on the
Mount, if lived and practiced, would abolish the Pentagon and armaments industry. Some
ultra-conservatives as well accuse Obama of being a “secret” Muslim.

UK Muslims Praise Top Judge on Shari`ah

CAIRO — A call by Britain's top judge for applying Islamic Shari`ah in
some parts of the British legal system has drawn appraisal from
British Muslims, saying the move would promote the country's
diversity.

"It is a credit to this country's strong and independent judiciary
that Lord Phillips has put the demands of justice above those of the
prevailing political narrative," Muhammad Abdel Bari, Secretary
General of the umbrella Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), said in a
statement on the group's website.

Lord Chief Justice Nicholas Phillips said Thursday that Islamic
Shari`ah could play a role in the British legal system.

"There is no reason why principles of Shari`ah law, or any other
religious code, should not be the basis for mediation or other forms
of alternative dispute resolution," he said.

The MCB said Britain should start a thoughtful discourse on the
inclusion of certain elements of Shari`ah in the British legal system.

Nouri al-Maliki ready to oust US from Iraq green zone

The green zone of Baghdad, a highly fortified slice of American suburbia on
the banks of the Tigris river, may soon be handed over to Iraqi control if
the increasingly assertive government of Nouri al-Maliki, the prime
minister, gets its way. A senior Iraqi government official said this weekend
the enclave should revert to Iraqi control by the end of the year. "We think
that by the end of 2008 all the zones in Baghdad should be integrated into
the city," said Ali Dabbagh, the government's spokesman. "By the end of the
year, there will be no green zone," he added. "The separation by huge walls
makes people feel angry."
