IMO we can see the avoidance of discontinuity created by the laws of physics or society as the most widespread pattern in our culture. Its use can be seen in our attempt to overcome the breach of continuity created by the laws of nature, as it is the case of our individual (physical) death, when we use the concepts of heaven, reincarnation, etc, The same thing can be seen at the society ...
