Taiwan tycoon to donate 3 billion US dollars for cancer research
Taipei - Taiwan business tycoon Terry Kuo plans to donate 100 billion
Taiwan dollars (3 billion US dollars) towards research to find a cure
for cancer, a newspaper reported Wednesday.
Kuo, 56, chairman of the Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, made the
decision following the death of his younger brother Kuo Tai-ming who
died from leukemia at a Beijing hospital on July 4, the Apple Daily
reported.
Kuo lost his wife to breast cancer in 2005.
'It's a pity that my brother could not enjoy the fruit of this
research. But other people can benefit from the result of this
research,' the Apple Daily quoted Kuo as saying.
Kuo has not said yet which institution will receive his donation, but
a doctor close to Kuo told the Apple Daily that the donation will fund
research by scientists in Taiwan and China so that Chinese all over
the world can benefit from the outcome of the research.
The donation will also fund the establishment of a bone marrow
transplant centre in Taiwan and in China, the source said.
Kuo, who has three private jets, is one of the richest men in Taiwan.
In 2006, the Forbes magazine named him as one of the 40 richest people
in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, ranking him eighth on the list with
4.4 billion US dollars.
Currently Kuo's 680,000 Hon Hai shares alone are worth 200 billion
Taiwan dollars (6 billion US). His personal assets would be much more
if his shares in Hon Hai's subsidiaries are counted.
