The U.S. has been in GTMO since 1901. A bilateral treaty governs our
use of the USN coaling station. Coal for U.S. Navy ships!!! Can you
imagine that? BWAHAHAHAWR!

Well, it's expensive maintaining the world's largest minefield (to
reciprocate the Cubans' own minefield) that so pissed off Princess
Diana. Lots of three-legged deer in GTMO! But we saved a lot by
getting rid of the local naval composite air wing, considering that we
now have jets and other flying objects that can get to GTMO and other
parts of Cuba in a supersonic hurry from Florida and Puerto Rico, should
they be needed. Of course, there is always an aircraft carrier and her
escorts in the Caribbean area, practicing take offs and landings as well
as chasing drug boats. And again, of course, every sailor/seabee,
airman, soldier, coastie and Marine permanently stationed in GTMO must
be paid, cared for, equipped, trained and *armed* to the teeth and
cojones. That costs a lot of wampum and moolah.
GTMO celebrates Jamaican Independence Day because (1) our civil service
and many contractor personnel are recruited from Jamaica and we must
give them due appreciation for their faithful services (and which may
also get them a Green Card one day). We even transport a Jamaican
Police color guard to GTMO along with cultural performers; and, (2)
he-he-he, it's a nice opportunity to show off the capabilities of an
airborne unit from the states. In a ceremonial way, of course. And
since they're in GTMO already, they get invited to participate in the
annual base defense exercise. Shooting blanks have never been so much
fun, specially to the armor and Big Bertha crews. These annual
festivities never failed to curl Fidelissimo Castrato's beard due to
being pulled hard and repeatedly, specially when around these times he
can't get volunteers from the Glorious, etc., Cuban Army to man their
glorious watch towers surrounding the U.S. leased property. And for
every Cuban tower there is a USMC tower within slingshot range. Very
nice place, this GTMO!
