China: Tourists Riot Over Shopping Trip
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Policemen armed with riot shields and batons were called in to subdue
angry tourists from the mainland who clashed with tour guides in the
tiny gambling enclave of Macao, the police said. The tourists were
apparently unhappy that the guides had taken them to too many shops,
when they wanted to see historical sites, The South China Morning Post
said. The dispute was said to involve more than 100 tourists. Unlike
neighboring Hong Kong, Macao, once a Portuguese colony and now a tourist
hot spot, has retained much of its European heritage, including its
Portuguese language and several World Heritage sites.
