First, thank you for admitting that RichAsianKid is 'rich'. Afterall,
where in the post did RichAsianKid say that these ugly mainland
Chinese people are not rich? They just look awful that's all. And RAK
specifically referred to these people as nouveau riche. So no
confusion there at all!
Second, I bet that the average guy from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore,
South Korea, Japan will still be considered "rich" in dirty POOR
China!! Afterall, don't forget, only 0.025%% of mainland Chinese have
over $1 million US in assets!
Third, about RAK's attire, have you guys noticed that the chic thing
to do for mainland Chinese is to dress UP while those secure about
themselves dress DOWN, and just let things be? That may be the next
step of evolution for China's nouveau riche - RAK's wardrobe is in
fact quite middle-class (perhaps even lower middle class) and the
challenge is how to be more 'shabby'.
Fourth, about those cars - it's true - visit a middle class Hong Kong
apartment complex with cars. There you'll see E and S class, 5 and 7
series BMWs, and if you go to the more exclusive clubs, Lambos,
Ferraris, Porsches. For this article to state that these are
"expensive cars" is a clear reflection of just how poor China still
is. I'll grant you one point though: one thing GOOD about China is
that a surge in China's economy leads to a rise in the Far East /Hong
Kong Stock Markets. Every day RAK's father gains or loses a porsche
that may be some average American's *annual* salary! Hehehehe!!
(That doesn't make RAK's family Forbes 400, but still pretty
comfy....and not just in China!)
Last, and this is an important point, there is a huge difference
between those blowhard upstreamers nouveaux and those who are more
comfortable with their wealth. Hat tip to Dave Brooks for this sample:
It's OK to spend $25000 US on your bathroom, but not if you spend
$15000 on your 7.1 surround sound theater system and 62" TV; it's OK
to spend $20000 US on your shower stall to be in tune with Zen rhythms
of nature, but taboo if you spend $10000 on an outdoor Jacuzzi; it's
OK to spend $65000 US on a Hummer, but vulgar if you spend $65000 on a
Corvette.
And don't forget those tiny little details....
You gotta spend $300 on that multipurpose industrial strength toasting
system that will be browning breakfast breads till the 23rd
century......but you'll be seen as very cheap if you just spend $29 on
a flimsy toaster.
Tsk tsk tsk, it's a class thing. But that's just a little more than
what mainland Chinese nouveau riche can handle at the moment..... :)
