Twenty years for an enlisted lifer? In most cases that would mean
earning just a base pay of a tad more than a mid-career major or a very
senior, retirable captain (majority of officers retire as majors).
After 20 years, there's that lifelong pension that may not make lifers
rich, but won't send them to the poorhouse either if they get laid off
in their second careers, or their families to the charity lines if the
retirees die. And if they made good use of all the benies and freebies
during their careers, they would have a paid up bachelor's degree (most
military technical courses are worth college credits), a paid up brand
new, tax free vehicle, and probably halfway through a regular mortgage
on a fully furnished home. If a wise lifer happened to be assigned even
for a short time to the Middle East, he would have numerous little
bottles of concentrated designer perfumes that sell for about a thousand
bucks each that he bought for about $20 each, gold jewelry of over 24
karats that jewelers will kill for (for remelting and adulteration into
lower grades), and a few Persian rugs, carpets and tapestry worth about
$25,000 each in the western market. Buying price? About $4,500 for an
excellent grade in the casbah.
Cannon fodder do not last for 20 years. Think about it, or why, O
Wizened One. Just like the civilian occupations, the military has its
equivalent of ditch diggers, leading ditch diggers, foremen,
supervisors, mid-managers and CEO's.....and "clerks" who have been to
specialized schools such as court reporting, paralegal, project
management and information technology. Lucky are those who enter the
military nuclear power and other hard hat, blue collar fields, e.g.,
nuclear welding or deep saturation diver, or those who enter the
PFC-to-M.D. program. We're not even discussing the luckiest bunch, the
ring knockers!
