Indo-US Nuclear Deal: An Overview
On August 1, 2008, the IAEA approved the safeguards agreement with
India,[after which the United States approached the Nuclear Suppliers
Group (NSG) to grant a waiver to India to commence civilian nuclear
trade.The 45-nation NSG granted the waiver to India on September 6,
2008 allowing it to access civilian nuclear technology and fuel from
other countries.However, India can commence nuclear trade with the
United States only after the deal is passed by the US Congress and is
likely to be the main focus of its last session which starts on
September 8, 2008.

Important Reactions after NGG Waiver
Describing the NSG waiver as a "passport" for India to conduct
nuclear
trade with the international community, External Affairs Minister
Pranab Mukherjee has said New Delhiwill wait for ratification of the
123 agreement by the US Congress before entering into bilateral
agreements with other supplier countries.

United States-India Peaceful Atomic Energy Cooperation Act of 2006:
An
Overview
The Henry J. Hyde United States-India Peaceful Atomic Energy
Cooperation Act of 2006, also known as the "Hyde Act", is the legal
framework for a bilateral pact between the United States and India
under which the U.S. will provide access to civilian nuclear
technology and access to nuclear fuel in exchange for International
Atomic Energy Agency-safeguards on civilian Indian reactors. This act
provides the legal basis for a 123 Agreement with India. The 123
agreement requires separate U.S. congressional approval and Indian
cabinet approval and will define the exact terms and conditions for
bilateral civilian nuclear cooperation.
