Actually it is the remnant of the "God King" concept that was prevalent
in the regions past. I believe that Cambodia is the last actual example
left of the concept.
While Thailand ended the absolute monarchy in 1932 they then embarked on
what was essentially a dictatorship that lasted until the early 1970's
so the concept of a western style democracy is only slightly over 30
years old in the Kingdom. Comparing the Thai's system to that in, say
the U.S. 30 years after independence, indicates that the Thai's have
progressed well in the establishment of the system. After all, the U.S.
system completely broke down some 78 years after independence and the
resulting civil war resulted in losses of some 17%% of all combatants, 1
out of every 6 men.
