Confucius' teaching alive in Beijing Olympic's Opening Ceremony

``Friends have come from afar, how happy we are,'' sang 2,008
performers, quoting Confucius and banging traditional ``fou'' drums,
in the welcoming scene at the Bird's Nest stadium.

The ceremony follows 13 months of rehearsals and includes 14,000
performers -- most from the People's Liberation Army -- and 3,000
``scholarly disciples'' of Confucius, whose teachings were banned
during the Cultural Revolution because they were considered elitist.

Who gives a damn about Confucius and his 2,500 year-old ideas?
