Sorry, Japan and Korean are still very well ahead of China in ship
building.

Have you visited the Hitachi shipyard or Mitsubishi shipyard in Japan?
Have you visited the Hyundai shipyard and Daewoo shipyard in Korea?

I have.

I too have visited the newly constructed shipyard in China. Still no
comparison to the ones in Korea and Japan.

The Koreans and Japanese can build ship generations ahead of China.

In what ways, Japanese and Korean built ships are generations ahead of
China?
Examples please.

It is always risky to put down China on anything that involves banging
metal. Below are two stories of note. There are more stories if you
care to search online.

All the article are having the same symptom with the "China Is A
Threat" theory. Almost all the articles overestimated the capabilities
of China, and they've all painted a too rosy pictures.

Japan and Koreans are no pushovers. Unlike the Chinese, the Japs and
the Gooks prefer the low-profile approach.

Shipbuilding tonnage up 30%%
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2008-03-02 09:09

China's shipbuilding tonnage jumped 30 percent to 18.93 million tons last year,
the country's top economic planning agency said Saturday.

China, the world's third-largest shipbuilder after the Republic of Korea and
Japan, grabbed 23 percent of the world's market share, four percentage points
higher than in 2006.

Among the total, 14.9 million tons of ships in tonnage were exported to 151
countries and regions, according to the National Development and Reform
Commission (NDRC).

The number of exported tonnage rose 25.6 percent and the export value rose 51.1
percent to $12.24 billion.

The country's new shipbuilding orders in tonnage soared 132 percent to 98.45
million tons last year. The figure accounted for 42 percent of the world's
total, up 12 percentage points from a year earlier.

The new amount raised the total orders in tonnage the country held to 158.89
million tons, 33 percent of the world's figure. The market share was nine
percentage points higher than in 2006.

Very true. No one knows exactly what's happening in China. Except
that everytime one looks its a whole new ballgame. And its not China
that is bitching about "Hey, who just ate my lunch?"

Building ships is not exactly rocket science. All western shipyards
have more or less given up the shipbuilding industry. Can't compete
with the Asian shipyards. Like you said its all about costs. China
can build a ship cheaper and faster than anyone else. If you got a
better business plan or technology then go for it. There are a lot of
competing shipyards who will pay you big bucks for a way out of the
cost down pressure. In business all you need to do is buy and put
together the best solution in the market. There is no need to make
everything yourself.

Remember the 3 Gorges Dam. The US thought they could scuttle the
project by banning American firms from bidding and by blocking World
Bank participation. China wouldn't have the heavy engineering
expertise...
