Raul Castro Meets with Honduran President
Havana, oct.9 (ACN) Cuba's First Vice-president Raul Castro welcomed
Honduran President Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales in an official ceremony
Tuesday in the Cuban capital.
Zelaya's trip marks the first time that a Honduran president visits
Cuba. The two countries reestablished diplomatic relations in January
2002.
The formal reception of the head of state took place in the Palace of
the Revolution and included a review of an honor guard of the
Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR).
Following the reception, Raul Castro and Manuel Zelaya held official
talks.
The large Honduran delegation accompanying President Zelaya includes
Foreign Minister Milton Jimenez, other cabinet members, representatives
of different political parties, executives of the chambers of commerce
and the tourism industry, and community, business and labor leaders.
Carlos Lage, executive secretary of the Council of Ministers; Felipe
Perez Roque, foreign minister; Marta Lomas, minister of foreign
investment and economic collaboration; Fernando Remirez Estenoz, head
of the international relations department of the Communist Party
Central Committee, and other government and political leaders were on
hand to receive the Honduran president.
Honduras has supported the annual resolution presented by Cuba at the
United Nations calling for an end to the nearly half century US
blockade on the island. The Central American nation joined the
Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in 1995. The 118-member body is currently
chaired by Cuba.
Since hurricane Mitch battered Honduras in October 1998, a total of
1,500 Cubans have provided medical services in the sister nation.
Meanwhile, a thousand Hondurans are studying at Cuban universities,
many at medical school.
Zelaya and his delegation continue their two-day visit on Wednesday.
Included on their busy agenda is a tour of the Latin American School of
Medical Sciences. The Honduran leader is also scheduled to meet with
Yadira Garcia, minister of basic industry and a member of the Communist
Party Politburo.
