Are you looking for a literal translation? Not very many things make
sense when translated literally. If you desire to be proficient as a
translator, you should avoid literal translations.
Yog koj hais txog qhov pib ntawm dabneeg ces, English lawv hais li no:
Once (not when) upon a time....Hmoob hais tias: Puag thaum ub ov...
Tamsim no peb Hmoob kuj muaj cov xav txog yav tom ntej lawm thiab.
Yog li, when telling Sci-Fi stories, we could say: Yav tom ntev no
ov...

TV..
qhov koj hais no, nws tsi nkag kis lawm. vim li cas kuv hais li no,
vim tias there is no way to translate "uncle" or "aunt" unless it is
clear who we are talking about. xyov uncle yog txiv dab, txiv ntxawm,
txiv hlob, yawg laus, txiv laus, txiv hluas.....los xyov yog dabtsi
li...
"Once upon a time" doesn't fit any hmong "phrase" at all. if we were
to translate it verbally, then it would not make sense in hmong at all
either. qhov zoo ces, nyuj muaj nyuj kab, neess muaj nees kev. yog
yus yuav muab nyuj kab ke txhais ua nees kabke mas, yuav ua tsi tau.
cia li khaws "puag thaum ub ov" no xwb....yog hais lus hmoob na.
keep in mind that when hmong tell stories, it usually refers to
something back in the past...however, the word "lug ntsuag" refers to
the "growth of mankind"...such as "ntsuag xyoob ntsuag ntoo"-
signifying the "beginning" of something. the word "dabneeg" also
refers to such things because "neej and dab" are the beginning of the
world. so when hmong say "puag thaum ub", it really refers to the
past...

Tzianeng,
If you are talking about a Hmong concept, why need for the English
translation or vice versa. I've never heard "When Upon A Time" used.
If you use it, people might misunderstand that you've used the
combination of words incorrectly. Still, if you insist on translating
it, let's give it a try.
When = Thaum twg
Upon = Nyob rau
A = ib
time = sijhawm
Therefore, "When upon a time" = Thaum twg nyob rau ib lub sijhawm.
What do you think?
