I went there a few years ago. The best is to get to know someone in
Kunming. They can pick you up from the airport and take you to the
Hotel, where popular tourist section. However, be aware of a few
Hmong folks there take advantage of you. For example, he arranges a
hotel room for you and charge double of what the typical room cost and
take you to the most expensive restaurant where typical Hmong cannot
afford to eat. He will charge you 2-3 times if he arrange a taxi for
you to go from Kunming to Paj tawg. You can negotiate for 400- 600
yuan from Kunming to Paj tawg on your own, but he will charge you
around 1200 yuan, plus hotel accomodation and meals for himself as
well as the taxi driver when you get to Paj tawg. At the same time, he
also arrange to pick you up for the same cost. However, if you do on
your own, you can always bargain directly for room cost if you are to
stay for few nights. The good thing about these folks is they take
good care of you with your expense.
I would suggest that you fly from Kunming to Paj tawg will be a lot
cheaper, shorter, and avoid scammer. Once you get to Paj tawg, I have
relatives there who will take good care of Folks from the US without
charging them anything and will make sure you are safe and enjoy your
trip. 3-4 star hotel rooms Paj tawg is 80 yuan to 100 yuans a night.
