Thailand, Laos agree to end refugee problem

Thailand and Laos for the first time agreed to cooperate to end the
problem of Hmong refugees in Northern Thailand.

The two Monday blamed human trafficking for the refugee crisis.

"It's time to solve the Hmong problem. We have no hidden agenda because
neither of us caused this migration but we, as well as the Hmong
refugees, are the victims of human trafficking," said Lao Foreign
Ministry spokesman Yong Chanthalangsy.

Yong was in Thailand yesterday where he met with the news media and
filmmakers. He was seeking to end cultural misunderstanding following
tension in May sparked by the Thai comedy movie "Mak Te", or Football.

Thailand has sheltered some 6,000 Hmong at Ban Huay Nam Khao in
Phetchabun since late 2004. They claimed to have fled political
oppression at home.

Interesting! My uncle told me that his sister called him from White
Water asking about these Hmong UN. She told my uncle that the camp
leaders informed everyone in the camp that Hmong 18 council (all they
know was Hmong 18 council) and General Chou Tchang send an American
along with two Hmong persons to pick up their summary of claims. The
camp leader told them that this time the UN will solve the problem for
sure. However, in order to get help from these UN, everyone must
provides their summaries of claims, especially those handicap, widows,
orphans, and anyone that came from the Jungle. These Hmong UN promise
SSI money to anyone who submit their summaries of claims which indicate
that they are victims from the jungle who suffered from attrocities
such as with bullets wounds and chemical poisoning...

US Official to Visit Dhaka to Examine Refugee Issues

Dhaka: The US official in charge of refugee affairs will travel to
Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Thailand next week to examine refugee issues
in the area, according to a report from the US State Department on
Thursday.
Ellen Sauerbrey, Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees,
and Migration Affairs, will be accompanied by the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres on the Thai portion of the
trip.

The objective of the trip to the three Asian nations, from August 21 to
September 2, is to "examine refugee programs and policy, including a
number of high-profile refugee issues," a State Department statement
said, without giving further details.

It will be Sauerbrey's first trip to the region since her appointment
in January, US officials said.
