Fatal Domestic Abuse on the Rise
Fatal Domestic Violence on the Rise
Carrie Hutton

To give you an idea of how common domestic abuse is, the Women's
Community Shelter serving Marathon County has been full all summer and
they have room for 28 families.

As far as Wednesday's murder suicide, Jane Graham Jennings says it's
quite common for violence to escalate once a victim like Thao decides
to leave and start a new life with someone new.

"We are all touched personally because our whole mission is to end that
and ensure that no one ever dies again at the hands of someone who
claims to love them," said Jennings.

She says her agency has three full-time bilingual staff members who try
to help women in the Hmong community if they have domestic problems.

Jennings says the best thing you can do if you know someone living with
abuse is to support their decisions, even if it is to stay in a violent
situation. As for stopping the violence, Jennings says it's up to the
community to hold abusers accountable since victims really have no way
to stop the violence against them.

Marathon County has a visitation center where families can safely
exchange kids without a face to face meeting.

Boyfriend Remains In Critical Condition After Triple Shooting
Police: Man Kills Wife, Self In Front Of 5 Children

UPDATED: 11:29 am CDT September 14, 2006

WESTON, Wis. -- A man who survived a shooting that left two others dead
remains in critical condition on Thursday at a Marshfield hospital.

Weston police said that Chor Xiong, 39, fatally shot his estranged wife
when she came to his home on Wednesday and wounded her boyfriend before
shooting himself.

Authorities said that Xiong killed Padalina Thao, 29, when she and Pao
Chang pulled up to Xiong's house to pick up their children. Xiong also
shot Chang before turning the gun on himself in front of five of the
couple's seven children, police said.

According to police, Xiong hid in the basement of his home at about 7
a.m., waiting for his wife and her boyfriend, and when they arrived to
pick up her children, he came outside and opened fire at them with a
shotgun.

The 41-year-old Chang is at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

Hmong 18 Clans Council Leader Nao Shoua Xiong said that he had been in
contact with the couple since July, when Thao called to say that she
couldn't live with her husband anymore.

Thao eventually moved to women's shelter in Wausau.

According to the Wausau Daily Herald, Thao and Chang worked at Great
Lakes Cheese in Wausau. The newspaper's Web site quoted a company
official who declined to give his name as saying that counselors have
been made available to help employees deal with the deaths.
