Same-Clan Marriages Demand 18 Clan Resolution
Saint Paul, MN (POBA Press August 16, 2007) - There is another
controversy brewing within the Hmong community. Advocates for same-
clan marriages are appealing to the 18 Clan Council for a resolution.
In a heated hearing on Saturday, August 11, advocates clashed with 18
Clan and audience members.
In the Hmong culture, same-clan relationships are taboo, even though
both parties might not even be related. Advocates argue that the
tradition is out of date and without merit.
"It's time to live in the present and let old traditions die," said an
advocate who only identified himself as Blong. "Artificial barriers
such as the same-clan marriage restriction need to be removed."
