Govt meeting focuses on flood
The government has authorised ministries and state organisations to
play a central role in the battle to return the country to normality
after many areas suffered serious flood damage earlier this month.
The agreement was made during the monthly government meeting held on
August 26 and 27 in Vientiane under the chairmanship of Prime Minister
Bouasone Bouphavanh. A number of ministers and high ranking officials
attended the event.
According to a report from the government, the flood affected 295
villages and 65,000 hectares of production areas, causing damage to
35,600 hectares of farmland, including 27,000 hectares of rice
plantations.
The flood also damaged 528 irrigation systems and 2,000 fish ponds and
killed about 2,800 animals. The cost of damage to roads and bridges
has reached 293 billion kip.
