Jim, my wife and I went to Thailand and Laos last year for a month
during summer and we were very much enjoying every minutes of it.
However, there are a few exception differences between us, Hmong
American and them like you said. The bottom line is depend on your
connection with them. When we spend our time there, we stayed with
our uncle the whole time with a few nights in hotel. They treated us
well and a few others but not those that you don't know them or they
don't know you, hence relationship is a key in this country. For
example, next to my uncle's house is his uncle but during our staying
with him his uncle never invited us to his house. In addition, there
also another Hmong family that live opposite and they could careless
about us either.

In fact, my uncle assured me that these Hmong Thai never accustom to
our Hmong American's culture. They used to live in isolation, because
they never seek political hierarchy and never depend on Hmong to
support them. On the other hand, Hmong American are unity, because
they help each other to hold ground in the political arena, therefore,
we are friendlier and that slowly became tradition for us now.
