Statement by President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev, August 26, 2008

My dear fellow countrymen, citizens of Russia!

You are no doubt well aware of the tragedy of South Ossetia. The night-
time execution-style bombardment of Tskhinval by the Georgian troops
resulted in the deaths of hundreds of our civilians. Among the dead
were the Russian peacekeepers, who gave their lives in fulfilling
their duty to protect women, children and the elderly.

The Georgian leadership, in violation of the UN Charter and their
obligations under international agreements and contrary to the voice
of reason, unleashed an armed conflict victimizing innocent civilians.
The same fate lay in store for Abkhazia. Obviously, they in Tbilisi
hoped for a blitz-krieg that would have confronted the world community
with an accomplished fact. The most inhuman way was chosen to achieve
the objective – annexing South Ossetia trough the annihilation of a
whole people.

DJK,

Russian will put international shooting target on its own soil.
Beside European union nations, China, US, and Canada; Ukrain, Poland,
Zchek, and Georgia are pointing their guns at Russian soil. If I were
the Russian, I would not put my country for international target for
their newly invented weapons. Laos, he he he, flexing it muscle..got
be dreamin! Put your money into tourism industry where you know you
can richly collect money from tourists rather than play with the fire
works. The dams you build are the ultimate, powerful weapons that
will wash off everyone out to the sea with no time if you invoke, and
its does not take many fire works to play with them.

Whether Laos recognizes the two regions' independence or not

In my opinion, Laos shall support Russia's actions first as one of the
five permanent members of UNSC, one of the most powerful nuclear
states and our old closest friends and brothers.

The most important is that Russia has been moving with caution by
international laws and agreements’ attention to solve this problem
with Georgia for long time.

Now, Abkhazia and South Ossetia are the fate like Kosovo that sooner
or later they would be recognized by the worldwide Russia's friend
countries

Dear Vong,

Read the latest news on the issue...

MOSCOW, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russia neither fears nor seeks a new Cold
War, but it depends on the West whether such a war will break out
again, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Tuesday.

"We are not afraid of anything, including the prospect of a new Cold
War, but we don't want one, and in this situation everything depends
on the position of our partners," Medvedev told the RussiaToday
television.

If they want to sustain a good relationship with Russia, they will
understand why Moscow recognized the independence of Abkhaziaand South
Ossetia, he said.

Medvedev also said that U.S. presidential candidates may make use
of the current situation in their election campaigns, although "voters
are indifferent to events abroad."

The president reiterated that recognizing the independence of
Abkhazia and South Ossetia was in line with the international law.

TBILISI, Georgia - Western leaders warned Russia on Wednesday to
"change course," hoping to keep a conflict that already threatens a
key nuclear pact and could even raise U.S. chicken prices from
blossoming into a new Cold War.

Moscow said it was NATO expansion and Western support for Georgia that
was causing the new East-West divisions, and Prime Minister Vladimir
Putin lashed out at the United States for using military ships to
deliver humanitarian aid to Georgia.

Meanwhile, Georgia slashed its embassy staff in Moscow to protest
Russia's recognition of the two separatist enclaves that were the
flashpoint for the five-day war between the two nations earlier this
month.

The tensions have spread to the Black Sea, which Russia shares
unhappily with three nations that belong to NATO and two others that
desperately want to, Ukraine and Georgia. Some Ukrainians fear Moscow
might set its sights on their nation next.

Over the last decade, the West has repeatedly PROVOCATED Russia over
security, trade and diplomatic issues:

1997-99 NATO Enlargements:
NATO invites Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary to join the
alliance. Russia protests, but the three countries join in March 1999.

1999 Kosovo:
NATO bombs Serbia to stop the war in the breakaway province of Kosovo.
Russia protests, but is unable to intervene.

1999 Chechnya:
Russia invades its breakaway province of Chechnya. Western leaders
accuse Russia of human-rights abuses, to the fury of its new
president, Vladimir Putin.

2002-04 NATO and EU Enlargements:
NATO and the EU invite several new members from the former Soviet
sphere to join. Russia again objects, but the enlargements take place
in spring 2004.
