Happy Birthday to SCH - you have reach a milestone of 10 years in
cyberspace!

SCH was born in the midst of a heated debate on Lao vs Hmong in the
later part of 1996. A member of the Laonet group decided single
handedly to change history by proposing to create the
soc.culture.hmong. "It was the discussion on the differences between
Hmong and Lao and how WE didn't get along back in OUR country LAOS that
inspired me to initiate
SCHM. I thought that we should work together instead of being
separated by our differences.
My fellow countrymen, let me say that having two legs, arms, eyes,
nose, ears and brain working together is always better than having them
work in conflict". That member was Kag Khetsavanh. So... thanks Kag -

For those of you who don't understand what a NEWSGROUP (like SCH) is an
open forum for discussion. It is NOT own by anyone. Anyone from
anywhere in the world can read what you are posting. As far as
archiving, this is done by an individual or group for whatever purpose
(in the case of SCH, the early archives was done by Kue Xiong and kept
at St Olaf as part of the Hmong Homepage). Later on, this was abandon
after the death of Kue Xiong but luckily dejanews took over the
archiving... and now Google has taken over dejanews. So, you can
access almost every post (now 14,591 posts) and you can search on any
topic posted from day one at:

For a newsgroup to be created, it must have a charter and be presented
to the Internet community to vote on it. It must pass by a 2/3
majority and have at least 100 votes.

Social.culture.hmong (SCH) was first proposed in 1994 by Alex C. Lor.
Unfortunately, when the final voting was counted on 12 May 1994 ,
there were 67 YES votes and 37 NO votes from a total of 104 valid
votes. The proposed "unmoderated group soc.culture.hmong " FAILED and
Alex was quite disapointed after lot of hard work that he had been put
on that time.

By 1996, Kag Khetsavanh announced that "instead of just arguing, let's
do something
positive for our fellow citizen - the Hmong". He prosed, single
handed, to set up the "soc.culture.hmong" Newsgroup, on Jul 31 1996.
But I could see that we would have similar problem as in 1994. We
neded more people to vote for us. after the internet community across
the globe voted, the votes were counted at the end of 30 Oct 1996,
There were 179 YES votes (36 Hmong, 8 Lao and the rest are from other
friends) and 23 NO votes, for a total of 202 valid votes. There were 6
invalid ballots - this mean that the unmoderated group
soc.culture.hmong has passed with 179:23. This is the first time in
history that the Hmong have carved and taken one piece of the internet
cake!!

SCH has now been on cyberspace for 10 years!!!

So, on this special occasion, I like to take my hat off for all those
who proposed the creation of the SCH and for all those who voted in
1994 and 1996.

And specially, I like to pat on the back of many SCH members who have
stuck at SCH since day one, thru good times and bad times, and these
members are the true champion of this forum. I thank each and every one
of you who stick around despite the many occassion of packing your bag
to leave this forum. Some of us have grown thru this forum. We have
learned so much from each other, We have lost members like Pa Chia and
others. We have mourned them together. We have laughed and we have
cried - some of us... some have been badly bruise and left this forum,
others just get stronger as time pass...

Personally, the last 10 years has been the best of my year in life. I
was intially inspired by John Nasbitt's book about the internet
especially when he talked about the internet "tribe"... I was
captivated by his thought and I could see that the internet would be
able to bring all the Hmong "tribe" into one place... the virtual home
for the Hmong. Not a Hmong a virtual country yet... but gazing from
the last 10 years in cyberspace, I am more excited what the future hold
for our people.

Thinking back 10 years ago, there was the odd US hmong, using email,
having homepages... then came the Oz Hmong, then the Thai Hmong and now
we have homepages from Hmong from 4 corners of the world, linking
ttogether, on so many issues and by so many people! And now with our
prople in Laos as well. Wow!!! that is certainly new in our history.
And just think about the free internet phone that even bring our people
closer together.

The Internet has certainly change our history - we have taken a new
path and we are forging ahead with vigor. There is no stopping. But
what happen from here on will depend on the dedication of all of us who
share this vision of virtual home - a place that we can call home and
drop by any time and be welcome back as some members have done in the
recents past.

Let us forging ahead, head high but not to forget that we are the
defacto Hmong Ambassador for our people....so, we need to be a bit
mindful, keep guard, control our fingers and be the best we can be from
where we are, with what we have. Let's make the next 10 years more
memorable than the last 10 years!

CHARTER:

The purpose of soc.culture.hmong is to provide to the Hmong community
a forum for discussion of Hmong culture, educational issues (reading
and
writing), news, and entertainment.

The Hmongs are a hill tribe people whose roots trace back 3000
years. They inhabit primarily the Yunan and surrounding provinces of
China. There is no history of where the Hmongs come from. The only
times when the Hmongs are mentioned in any historical context is when
they are in conflict with the Chinese Empire. The Hmong folklores
tell of a time when the Hmongs had a nation with a king and the
great wars that ensued. The Hmongs ultimately lost a war to the
Chinese Empire and were exiled from their homeland. The Chinese refer
to the Hmongs as Miao (Sons of the Soil):

san miao = 3 hmong = peb hmoob

Today the Hmongs are scattered throughout the world. From the
mountains of Laos, Thailand and China to the great cities of France,
United States and Australia to even lesser known places, the Hmongs
take asylum from political persecutions. Outside of Laos, the largest
concentration of Hmongs is in Fresno, California, where more than
50000 hmongs reside. Ever since the Vietnam War, the Hmongs have
saught political asylum throughout the world.

More than 90000 Hmongs make their home here in the United States.
When the Hmongs came here it was like implanting a 15th century
culture into a 21st century world. Now the Hmongs are forced to
struggle and lived under western norms. In today's soceity, the
family structure is breaking apart. This is an effect that is
detrimental to the Hmong who puts family first. This is just one
problem facing the many Hmong youths today.

With this newsgroup hopefully we can discuss this and many other
problems facing our community as we struggle to survive in this
country.
