A 54-year-old man killed himself after shooting his 16-year-old son
Wednesday, sheriff's officials said.

Sacramento County coroner's officials identified the father as Ka Thao
Vang.

Officials said Vang and his son had been arguing, but don't know what
prompted the shooting about 3:45 p.m. at 37th Street and 44th Avenue.

Deputies arrived to find the teenager lying in the front yard,
authorities said.

The teenager, identified by a brother as Phong Vang, was hospitalized.
Family members said he is expected to survive.

After the shooting, Ka Thao Vang retreated into the house, where he
turned the gun on himself. Deputies found his body in the front room
with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Coroner officials removed the body from the single-story house late
Wednesday as a crowd, many of them family members, including his wife
and children, wept outside.

Neighbors and family members said Ka Thao Vang was a gentleman, who
always wore a shirt and tie, even while using a leaf blower.

"He was always clean," said neighbor Lucy Spezzia. "I would never hear
him scream at his kids. His kids would always help him clean."

"They are good neighbors," said Patty Brown, who lives across the
street.

Brown and her husband, Eb Phromm, were among the first on the scene.

Brown said the boy was sitting on a couch with a friend on the porch
when his father came out and shot him.

Before going back inside, the father tried to shoot his son again, but
the gun jammed, Brown said.

Brown said her husband jumped over a fence and tried to revive the
boy.

"We were not going to let the boy lay there to die," she said.

Brown said Ka Thao Vang's wife kept saying "Help us!" Brown said she
called 911, and while waiting, she heard another gunshot from the
house.
