As I have covered briefly in my little book, "The Root & the Fruit:
Hmong Identity" by Hmongland Publishing http://www.hmongabc.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=462
that the Hmong clan system does positive effect on health especially -
less illness such as heart disease, cancer, depression; less
coincidence of suicide, drug & alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, crime
and violence.
There is now growing evidence that there is a connection between
spirituality and its role in health. Spiritually people have a greater
life expectancy - by as much as nine years - as well as less disease
and better survival rates. The lack of spirituality, in the case of
the Hmong, has been linked to the Hmong Sudden Death Syndrome as
reported by Dr Bruce (Thao Pao) Bliatout in his work on the subject in
this USA.
Spirituality need not be defined as religion but as a connection to a
greater being or search for meaning in life. Even if people have
never practised religion, studies consistently show up to 80%% turn to
some form of spirituality when confronted with serious illness.

Good Doc!
Just want to add..the book "when the spirit catches you fall" was
written on a hmong child in Merced, California, who "qaug dab peg"
whose parents were seeking spiritual healing (ua neeb), but the
social workers and team of medical doctors were against it. This book
is now adopted for all medical schools in the US.
Txiv neeb in California, Wisconsin, and Minnesota can legally apply
for "shama's certificates".

Thanks... to add that.. Yes... you are right... taht books has become
a text book in all major Medical schools as you said.
When I was in the State last time, I was in Merced and visit those
folks who run the Shaman Licencing program. The initial case was well
reported - a copy can be found at the Hmong Electronic Journal - from
Hmong Homepage.
Thanks... again.

the book is a standard beyond medical schools. in public health fields
as well. it might even be reading in public admin curriculums.
the professionals in the fields of medicine, social services, law
enforcement, etc... involved in this case, owe the girl and her
parents a deep and sincere apology. there is no price tag on how these
people will ever repay to the family and the girl. i know the girl's
family, as we are related. my own family suffered a similar, but less
tragic deceit, too.
dr pao, do you guys have similar complexities in oz land? where
physicians, social services, and the law impose their blind and
misguided will on the patient? what's going on with issues such as
euthanasia? do patients/dr's have such rights?

In Oz, the Hmong community is small and we have a good service with
Hmong interpreter as well as I being around from day one and quite
accessible to all health practioners and goverment 0ffiocials, so we
do not run ionto much complexities.
Our medical schools are have pioneer the Social medicine since my time
and Oz is a land of multicultural - more than 120 ethnic groups living
in my State - so cultural appropriateness is a norm to most doctors...
but this does not mean to say that all doctors would practice as it
should be.
We had the first open heart Surgery in the late 1979's and since then
the Hmong have gone thru all sort of hospital treatment and there
seems to be no major drama.

xiong.

What the fuck? Is this for real. A shaman certificate?
I'm going to do research on this.

Yeah, I think an uncle of mine has one. I didn't bother to check who
issued the certificate, and what kind of priviledges, rights, or
responsibilities it actually comes with.
At the very least, with these certificates, I hope to see these
charlatans sued and put to jail if and when they give harmful
diagnosis, treatment, and advice. For example, any shaman advising a
patient not to seek medical attention for a condition which results in
a patient's death should be charged and convicted for negligent
homicide.

You know shaman will never forbid patients to seek medical help like
restricted christian folks. They actually "teem caij" for a few day
to see if that patienta are improving their health before he proceed
further. However, they are lots of fake shamans out there too.
