>> World Vision to provide rice worth     US$ 700,000.
> $50k? Â If that is true, shame on the US. Â A small country, Laos gave

Laos thanks int'l community for support
Addressing the impact of recent flooding is a priority for the
government in the coming months as many areas of the country require
assistance.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs this week held a briefing on the flood
situation to inform the international community about the need for
emergency relief assistance.
To date, Laos has received emergency assistance totaling more than 13
billion kip (US$1.5 million), including 4 billion kip (US$464,000)
from Thailand, 1 billion kip (US$150,000) from Australia, 964 million
kip (US$111,000) from Japan, 864 million kip (US$100,000) from China,
433 million kip (US$50,000) from the USA and 260 million kip (US
$30,000) from the Republic of Korea. The World Bank and Asian
Development Bank have donated more than 3 billion kip (US$400,000).
Other countries and international organisations have already expressed
their willingness to provide further emergency relief. The Singaporean
government has informed the Lao government it will provide more than
433 million kip (US$50,000) and World Vision has pledged rice worth
about 6 billion kip (US$700,000).
Apart from financial assistance, the Lao government is also receiving
technical support from development partners, especially the United
Nations, in data collection and socio-economic impact assessments,
which are expected to be finalised in the coming days.
This data will help the Lao government mobilise resources to mitigate
the impact of recent flooding and undertake further preventive
measures.
German Ambassador to Laos , Dr Peter Wienand, recently met with Vice
Minister of Planning and Investment, Mr Bounthavy Sisouphanthong, to
discuss German contributions to emergency aid and reconstruction
efforts.
