Laos is ruled by a one-party military regime under the control of the
Socialist Republic of Vietnam and staunchly allied with the military
juntas and dictatorships in Burma, North Korea, Cuba and elsewhere.
Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic was recently flown from
the Serbian capital Belgrade to the The Hague where he will face trial
before a UN war-crimes tribunal. HND in cooperation with other human
rights and non-governmental organizations has documented the massacre
and killing of thousands of innocent and unarmed Hmong and Laotian
civilians by key Lao military and political leaders of the communist
party in recent months.
"On behalf of the HND and the Hmong community, we staunchly condemn
the brutal and corrupt Lao military regime, including the military
and communist party leadership, for their ongoing massacre and mass
starvation of innocent Hmong civilians in Laos," said Christy Lee, of
HND's Washington, D.C. office. "We want these Lao military and party
officials to immediately cease these deplorable attacks, including Lao
helicopter gunships strafing and rocketing Hmong villagers, which
have resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent Hmong women and
children in recent months."
