Old news, but thought you should know. The Lao Government has already
extended the olive branch to the Lao Expatriates community overseas.
The ball is in the Lao Expatriate's court!

Laos National Assembly, on May 12, approved the amended nationality
law which, among other things, allows the children of Lao expatriates
to become Lao nationals, provided one of their parents is a Lao
citizen. Lao refugees who have kept in touch for seven years with the
Lao embassy in the country they live in may also request their Lao
nationality back.

Foreigners and persons of no nationality who have lived in Laos for 10
years may also apply for Lao citizenship if they renounce their own
nationality.

here are my questions:

1. how and will we get our land/farm back? even if it is just the plot
that our house used to sit on...
2. what is the tax rate and how can one pay/file it?
3. what exactly is the application process, time line and cost? will
there be a test of culture, language and history?

if anyone knows please shed some light...

sincerely,

phi nong hmong khammoune (borikhamxay)

This must be too good to be true!!!! Even if this is true...MOST
Laonorks would not want to permanently return, let alone "participate"
in national development under a bunch of thugs that has NO CODE OF
LAWS. Until a public appearance of the communist's president making a
public speech welcoming her children to return home...visiting Laos is
probably the best option for now.

Here is my understanding of the US citizenship rules set up by the
State Dept. If a country automatically grants citizenship to it's
people because of where they were born, heritage, culture, ethnicity
or something similar. The key word is "automatically" gives
citzenship, then the US State Dept. cannot take away that person's US
citzenship, then that person have/gets "dual" citizenship.

From what I can tell, a person would have to apply for Laos
citizenship right now even with the new law. if that's the case then
that person would lose their US citizneship once they apply for Lao
citizenship. So be cautious before doing anything.
