A nationwide television meeting opened in Vientiane on Monday with a
common proposal to use a new satellite link so that more people can
access Lao National Television channels.

People in the provinces want to watch Lao National Television
programmes, but many of their satellites accept only the Lao Star
Channel through the Thai Com 5 satellite, and TV officials were of the
common view that the issue needed to be urgently addressed to supply
more information to the Lao people.

The proposal for a new satellite link was in response to a question
posed by Deputy Minister of Information and Culture Prof Dr Bosengkham
Vongdara, who wanted participants to give frank opinions to improve
Lao national television from now until 2020 and integrate the network
into the region.

A representative of Vietnamese television in Laos , Mr Dinh Quang
Dung, said at the meeting that Vietnam now had its own satellite and
would grant Lao TV free use of it so that more people could receive
local TV programmes.

From what I know Lao TV is bloated with inherited excesses and non core
crossed interests, it is therefore high in operational costs.
Technically it is still burden by analogue systems, and lack of, with plain
and restrictive content.
It needs to slim down, reform and improve in cost effeciency. GOL should
carefully seed the business with some capital
namely to go digital transmission (which is also cost cutting measure in the
long run) that will make it easier and more compatible with new satellite
broadcast and production, like Lao Star (Gen Cheng family owned). A TV on
demand system will make program delivery reach its intended audience therby
increases its popularity.
