Muab saib los tos Hmoob tsi tsim tug txiaj dab tsi los Hmoob xav ua li
cas tes ua xwb.. Why don't they call a summer festival instead calling
it a Hmong New year. Read it yourself.
Faj
FITCHBURG— The Hmong community of Central Massachusetts gathered at
Saima Park this weekend to say goodbye to 2008 and welcome in the new
year.
President Kao Yang of the United Hmong of Massachusetts explained that
traditionally, the Hmong celebrate New Year’s in December, but because
of winter weather, many community leaders along the Eastern seaboard
decided to celebrate the holiday while it was still warm.
The Massachusetts celebration was the first.
“Next month in October there will be a celebration in Providence, then
in New York. The Midwest Hmong community will celebrate in October and
November and the main celebration will take place in Fresno,
California, at the end of December,” said Be Yang, a member of the
association.

To all,
Regardless of when it is or where it is...its not a new year
celebration...in the past, in sacramento, i have been asked a few
times by a few to be part of the "sacrmaneto new year inc"...and i
refused...but i never told them why i don't want to join....simply
because such a thing (pov pob, tshav qaib etc..) is not a new year
celebration for hmong. yog tias lawd lam muab hu something else other
than "new year" no ces kuv kam joing kawg....but this is no thte
case. the "idea" of hmong new year, as we know it now, was carelessly
and wrongly exposed to the outside world. and its sad...now, when the
outside world (even the hmong) refer to new year celebration, all they
know is "ball tossing, vendors, soccer, etc"...
as i explained before (and got rediculed by it) hmong new year
celebration occurs in house, and it involves, hu plig, tiam tsiab, noj
tsiab, ntuag qhawv, noj 30, pe tsiab, txw xwm kab, ntuav pob
ntoo....

Tsuj,
You seem to have a lot to share. How about you start a new thread and
provide/propose an outline of what/how/when a Hmong New Year should be
done and get feedback/debate from the folks here? Perhaps starting
out with chosing a date from the lunar calendar?
http://kalender-365.de/lunar-calendar.php
Who knows, the subject might even draw interest and participation from
our Hmong scholars including my dearly departed and maybe even your
long lost anthropologist???
Peace,
HK

Tsuj,
It's obvious as you've pointed out that many young people and even old
ones don't know or may have been misinformed about the subject. Also
that correcting and trying to steer people into a "different"
direction is an uphill battle. Sometimes one might feel that certain
subject has already been beaten to death but if it keeps popping up,
doesn't it mean that there is a need to keep on addressing it?
Anyhow, I still think it's a good idea for people who have some good
information (you inluded)to put it out here and have a lively
discussion about it. I am definitely interested to learn more from
everyone.
Peace,
HK

nub,
koj hais yog ler mas...temsis tsam no ces..tsi muaj leejtwg mloog
lawm...cia lawd nug mam li teb xwb. seems like everyone just wants to
follow the flow of society no matter if the "flow" is misguided or
not. the important thing to know is....xyoo tshiab 30 will exist
inhouse (as it should be) regardless if there is a "tshav pob" or
not..that 3 day of "caiv" los leg 30 xyoo tshiab will always be there
regardless if "xeev laus" yuav tsa hauv toj (tom tshab pob). I just
hope that the meaning of hmong new year will not further evolve as
part of "christmas".
yaweh
