What do you guys and gals think of the Hmong 3rd Generation or
Generation Y. It sounds to me that many are too Americanize....

1. Acting stupid (rarely shown any respect to Hmong elders, ua thaj
loj loj xwb)
2. So self-centered (ruam and tsis paub xav)
3. Dating outside of Hmong community (I.E, dating white and black and
refused to date Hmong, stated that Hmong are too uneducated or too
npaj nawj)
4. Too many are becoming gay and lesbian (does not want to date and
stay so single..felt happy to be with their groups (pab poj niam or
txiv neej).

There is nothing wrong with them be themselves. Just want to her

Hmongtusjetli,

Ntau tus hluas Hmoob tsis yog "becoming too Americanize" nawb. Lawv
tsuas yog becoming stupid and self-centered xwb ov. Tiam sis peb yuav
tau ua siab ntev vim tias no yog ib qhov phase uas lawv yuav tau mus
dhau xwv lawv thiaj yuav xeev. Muaj tseeb, peb ib cov hluas ces cia
li get stuck in this phase and never outgrew (like some people here in
SCH - still talking nonsense garbage all day in their 40s and 50s).
Tsis tag li ntawd, peb yuav tau txaus siab hais tias vim cov hluas
express lawv tus kheej freely tau, peb thiaj muaj coob leej ntau tus
mus nrog luag ua doctor, lawyer, businessman, politician etc. Yog peb
yuam lawv nyob peb cov Hmong culture nkaus xwb ntshai peb yuav tsis
caum tau lwm haiv neeg.

npaj nawj>

HTJ,

In this xenophobic nation we live in, I think it would pay us some
good to choose our words and perhaps even pay attention to our
thoughts a little more wisely. Your wording above makes it sound like
being "American" is somehow a bad thing. Very dangerous wording and
ammunition for folks that want to see our kind shipped back. I do
agree that losing some of the good ol' values we tend to cherish as
Hmong folk is a negative thing. But I do not agree that becoming
Americanized is necessarilly a bad thing. That could be because I do
not generally believe that the things you listed below are necessarily
and exclusively American.

<1. Acting stupid (rarely shown any respect to Hmong elders, ua thaj

> 2. So self-centered (ruam and tsis paub xav)>

I do see the first two things you listed above on occassion. I do not
see it as a general problem across the board, and definitely not at a
frequency that requires a general application to the generation as a
whole.

When we talk about kids not respecting their elders...we need to
examine the root cause and the reason why these young Hmong Americans
behave the way they are? What factors contributed to this kind of
behavior? If it's a "learned" condition, how/what can we do as parents
to "condition" them with proper behavior? In other words, how are your
PARENTING skills? Thoughts?

On the issue of "too americanized"...what is "Americanized"? Can
someone defines what this term mean? To me...Americanized is the
ability to adapt and adopt to your surrounding in order to MAXIMIZE
your potential for advancement. Ask yourself this question...if Hmong
didn't adapt and adopt to this country's...would we have come this far
to be who we are? IMHO...I am an American before I am a Hmong.
