(Honolulu Mass Transportation) Mufi almost got elected...

Author: Alvin E. Toda
Date: Sep 22, 2008 19:55

Only about 30%% of the electorate voted in this
weekend's primary and Mufi could have gotten in with
over 50%% of the vote. He fell a tinny winny bit shy of
the required amount. Too bad. It's really a vote on the
steel wheel on steel rail thing. Actually Honolulu's
numbers are probably lower than 30%% because the other
islands usually vote in higher percentages. I wouldn't
be surprised if the percentage on Oahu is closer to
25%%.

(Mainland Hawaiians) Update on Seattle Hawaiian Festival

Author: Alvin E. Toda
Date: Sep 15, 2008 19:15

Just received an email from a HS classmate who
solicited us for donations to the above. He worked on
the planning committee. Looks like it will become a
regular feature on the Center Schedule. [I'm trying
again posting this from my shell account which is
faster than a web browser with dial up access. Posting
was with little success in the past. Perhaps this has
been fixed recently. We also had a previous post in
this ng on this topic of Mainland Hawaiians, but I
don't seem to see this on my shell browser. Hence, this
new thread]

Here's an excerpt from the email:

"Thanks again for your support at the Seattle Center.
It was so successful, that the Live Aloha! festival has
been made part of the Festal Programs where only
certain enthnic communities are automatically schduled
in every year. This is the first time that the Hawaiian
community has been included and will be included with
no time expiration. Mahalo and ahui hou."

  Suggestions for hikes on Maui

Author: Tony Lima
Date: Sep 11, 2008 07:20

My family is vacationing on Maui. The two "kids" (24 and
26) want to take one or two hikes. Suggestions greatly
appreciated, especially those that (a) don't involve too
much driving up winding roads and (b) are relatively close
to Kihei. Mahalo in advance. - Tony

  (Varroa mite) Big Island Planning

Author: al Guacamole
Date: Sep 9, 2008 23:55

Looks like the Hawaii Beekeepers Association has given it their best
shot. Just got the latest from the Chair, Michael Klicks. Seems HBA
hasn't been able to get the govt to take decisive action for over a
year since the mite came to Oahu. This is what I've gotten in email on
this subject. It makes a lot of sense.

"IMO, now the task of convincing the HDOA, the Governor, the
HISC, DBEDT, the USDA, ARS and other responsible agencies to
do their duties in dealing with Varroa in any effective way
will need to be taken up and promoted aggressively by the
major commercial apiculture business owners, by the major
growers of pollinator dependant crops, by the chefs,
distributors, wholesalers, and retailers whose businesses
depend on these crops, and by those members of the public at
large who understand the importance of honeybees as
pollinators in our lives here."
