I cannot imagine that any politician who wants the Super Ferry to go
into
operation is going to pay a high price for their support. It just
seems to
me that the overwhelming majority of island residents are in favor of
the
service, with a very small minority fighting tooth and nail to
prevent it
from operating.

Well said...and the "few" who do oppose it are completely misinformed!
I loved watching them make themselves look like complete fools on the
news...
they hired a "scientist" to support their claim that...

Well I guess Lingle wont count on support from the
demonstrators. That majority you talk about seems weak
to me.

The eventual port for the Super Ferry on Hawaii Island is at
Kawaihae, which was explained to me ---because the military would use
it from Pohakuloa Military Camp/Base for transport.
Kawaihae is approximately 2 hours from Kailua-Kona, and probably about
the same from Hilo. It is closer to Pohakuloa. In all fairness
Kawaihae is a good deep water harbor but I think Hilo would be as
well. Certainly the population center is not at Kawaihae.

Well, Hilo is also a good deal farther away from Honolulu than Kawaihae.
Since the second ferry vessel that is to make runs to the Big Island
beginning in 2009 is planned to also augment service to Maui and/or
Kauai,
it's no surprise that the Superferry would want to minimize running
times to
and from the Big Island by using the deep-draft harbor closest to
Honolulu.
