Inouye

Senator Inouye made a comment concerning Barak, i.e. "but he went to
Punahu
and that was not a school for the improvished." "To suggest that
Punahou
maybe set his flie palnt in place, I find it very interesting". He has
apparently apologized for the statement he made. My question is, why
should
he apologize for the statement he made? My second question, if that
is how
he feels, are we not better off knowing what he believes?

He apologized for his choice of words. We know what he
said. But when he said what he said, he gave the
impression that Punahou is elitist-- not something that
alumni and students would be happy to hear.

Quite true. In fact, Obama might have to deal with Sen
Inouye as the chairperson of the committees he sits on.

Everybody believes that their school is special. But it
doesn't mean that they think that they are better
persons than anybody else. They can respect other
non-Punahou students while believing that their own
students are the best here, or mostly come from the
upper or professional social classes here in town.
It's when they believe that everyone there is that way
that they get into the grey area of elitism. Of course,
not all students are like that, or feel like that. So
Inouye was being prudent by apologising for his choice
of words.

Follows how?

I'm pretty sure my plumber makes more than me and I have a
graduate degree (science). And he can afford not to show up,
I can't.

Being "special" and being "elite" are two different things. Do you think
that the students of any purblic school thinls they are "elite"?

But it

They may not "think" they are any better, but there "are" better because
only the smartest and brightest are accepted into the school....
