Fire ants on big island and Kauai

This is one of those pesky invasive species that first
appeared on the big island and looks like it has
spread. Will have a big impact on papya farmers.

The Supper Ferry will probably spread it to all the
other islands.

That's very distressing news. They entered the mainland from South
America around 1913 and have taken up unwelcome residence especially in
the South.

My personal "best?" 47, from accidentally stepping on a mound while
gawking at a distant thunderstorm. That's 23 bites on one leg, 23 on the
other, and one on what Dick Cheney might call an "undisclosed location."
For 2 days I had to pop Benedryl like Dr. House pops Vicodin and I'm not
even particularly allergic to them.

You don't want 'em. Good luck.

Hey we coffee farmers are kind of scared of it too. When you are
picking coffee, the potential for getting bitten is high. The Tiny
Fire Ant is a real threat! The obnoxious coqui is a noise and quality
of life threat.

I would think Young Brothers and Matson will spread the fire ant first,
if they haven't already done so.

Aloha from San Diego,

Rick

But the numbers don't go with Young Borthers... The
Super Ferry will probably handle many times the cars
than both of them and Ferry doesn't even plan to have
agricultural inspectors like Young Brothers, and we all
who have used Matson know that they insisted that the
cars be cleared of all contents in the car. They don't
want to transport any fruit flies to the mainland
inadvertantly. The ferry cars will be packed with
whatever their passengers want to transport to another
island. Remember the cars that were found on Maui full
with imu stones?

Wow. These really seem to be trouble. Didn't realize
that they were so agresive. And I guess they like the
tropical weathe
-- judging from their original source.
Will we be ever rid of them?

A great letter to the editor in our West Hawaii Today (Kona side
paper) yesterday regarding the seriousness of Tiny Fire Ants. Will
try to post the link later today.

But don't bait traps use arsenic in them. At least,
that's what I have used for an ant problem. IIRC always
thought the instruction part about not using in the
kitchen made sense. What if an ant with arsenic
poisoning crawls on a papaya to die?
