A little taste of home in Seattle

Meh.

The color of the sky is different.
And the trades ... where dey steh?
And MAN, it's COLD outside!
There was a bit of snow the day before I flew in.
Only time I've seen weather like this, it was on top of Mauna Kea.

For those who don't know, I'm now working for a certain rather large
company in the Redmond/Bellevue are of Washington state. My parents
love it because they can now drive a few hours compared to flying a
few hours, in order to see me. And yes, it's a significant increase
in salary.

But to the topic:

I've found the Lynnwood L&L Drivein location (aka "Hawaiian Barbeque"),
and I also saw a place called, "Bobby's Hawaiian" on a TV show called,
"Diners, Drive-inns and Dives", on the Food Network last night, and I
heard from a friend about some Hawaiian Music also last night, but a
number of Ooopses on my part (plus a massive Xbox session of Halo 3
combat at work for Pau Hana) led to me missing that engagement.

Oh man, Michael; I've got nuttin to contribute to sooth your soul in that
cold cold place, but... man, remind me of when you were pining for Hawaii
from Canada... back back back... in the old days...

So... now, years later... what have you learned from your experience
living in Hawaii?

11.5+ years ago, yeah.
A bit further back, all we had was ... "That Other Place".

There's a legendary joke about "The best case: Get salary from America,
build a house in England, ..."

I got tired of eating at L and L in Lynnwood, too much shoyu for me.
I go to Uwajimaya, the Japanese store in International District,
downtown Seattle, across from the train station.
You can buy frozen laulau, Portuguese sausage, Tacoma Tofu, Hilo koko,
Kohala kim chee, lup cheong, fish cake, manju, sushi, kimpira.
The prices are going up, as with all groceries, but you can satisfy
your Hawaii cravings, at least foodwise.

I remember that store! I used to go to one in Bellevue. That's a great
store.

Way late to catch up with this thread, but anyone around to see this
today
should check out the Hawaiian Festival at Seattle Center. You can see

That's great! I also participated in a small way. A high school
classmate is on the planning committee and sent email to us saying
that Punahou and Kamehameha graduates putting in a big effort and that
we should support the Festival as well. It got our competitive juices
flowing and the result is that Waipahu High School put on a good
showing of support as well. This is a guy who is now a lawyer-- having
got his degree in the military. Jerry is constantly reminding us of
what losers we are, that so few of us public school kids of our
generation went to college.
