Haiti Reborn Update September 27, 2006

This week we are asking you to take action to support Haiti debt cancellation
and also to help our partner organization, the Quest for Peace, in the effort
to call on the U.S. government to stop interfering in Nicaraguas upcoming
elections. We are just now launching a new e-mail program with the nifty new
frame you see above these will be weekly program updates with occasional
action alerts. Until next week

Peace,
Tom Ricker
Coordinator, Quixote Center/Haiti Reborn

**Hands off Nicaragua Ad Campaign**

At this moment the U.S. - represented by its ambassador to Nicaragua, Paul
Trivelli - is blatantly attempting to influence the Nicaraguan presidential
elections to be held in November. Trivelli is doing everything he can to
ensure that the U.S. government's preferred candidate, banker Eduardo
Montealegre, wins the presidency, and to make sure former president Daniel
Ortega, of the Sandinista party, loses. This is not the way fair, free,
elections work, and it's up to us to stand up and say it's wrong.

The Quest for Peace also a program of the Quixote Center will be placing a
signature ad in papers in Nicaragua calling on Trivelli to stop interfering.
You can get details about the ad, and add your name to the 600 people already
on board. There is a donation requested to offset expenses. Read more.

**Please call your member of Congress today and demand debt cancellation for
Haiti.**

The International Monetary Fund IMF announced last week that Haiti
qualified for debt cancellation, but also that it would have to wait for at
least two years and implement draconian conditions to receive it. Haitis
external debt was accumulated under the Duvalier governments, and during
periods of great internal strife. The monies borrowed have not helped Haiti
impoverished majority, and they should not have to forgo health services and
education for their children so that it can be paid back.

On June 22 Maxine Waters (D-CA) introduced a resolution into the U.S. House of
Representatives calling for immediate cancellation of Haitis debts. The H.Res
888 was referred to the House Committee on Financial Services where it will
die unless we can get a few more co-sponsors over the next few days.

There are now 64 co-sponsors to House Resolution 888 calling for immediate
cancellation of Haitis multilateral debt. If we can reach 80 co-sponsors then
the resolution could be voted on in committee.

But we need to act fast. The congressional session ends soon. Even if there is
no vote this session, if we get enough co-sponsors we can move quickly next
year. So, please take a moment to call your representative and ask them to
co-sponsor H Res 888! The Congressional switchboard is (202) 224-3121. Phone
calls are better than e-mails but you can also look up your members of
Congress at the House website and e-mail them: www.house.gov
