Freedom Convoy Relived in Cuba

The victorious passing of the Freedom Convoy, 48 years ago,
through Ciego de Avila and Sancti Spiritu was recalled on
Friday with massive celebrations.

Students and combatants reliving the route of the Freedom Convoy arrived in
the cities of Ciego de Avila and Sancti Spiritus, where they ratified their
profound conviction that there is nothing in the world able to crush the
strength of truth and ideas, as stated by Cuban President Fidel Castro.

The victorious passing of the Freedom Convoy, 48 years ago, through Ciego
de Avila and Sancti Spiritu was recalled this Friday with massive
celebrations and activities in both cities, reported AIN.

Thousands of people from Ciego de Avila, including students, leaders of the
Young Communist League of Cuba (UJC) and members of the Association of
Combatants of the Cuban Revolution gathered at the intersection of Maceo
and Carretera Central.

There they ratified their profound conviction that there is nothing in the
world able to crush the strength of truth and ideas, as stated by Fidel
when he explained one of the concepts of the Revolution, and the decision
to follow the legacy of the Moncada, the Granma and the Sierra Maestra.

On January 5, 1959, the Freedom Convoy stayed nearly three hours in the
capital of Ciego de Avila, from where Fidel phoned other rebel commanders
to know what the situation was, in a moment when the entire island was an
eruption of revolutionary euphoria.

People gathered at the Serafin Sanchez Park in the capital of Sancti
Spiritu received the students who relived the arrival of this convoy in the
town of Yayabo. During the act, people listened to recorded fragments of
the speech by Commander Fidel Castro on the dawn of January 6, 1959, when
he talked for the first time to the locals and recognized their support in
the revolution.

On Saturday, a group of students, guides and combatants from this
provincial capital will continue the journey of the Freedom Convoy to
Cabaiguan.
