Jan. 29 (Bloomberg) -- When the Soviet Union invaded their country in
December 1979, Afghan fighters took to the hills. Traveling with
mules, camels and old trucks, the mujahideen fought back with whatever
they had: rifles, grenade launchers, antitank mines and, later, U.S.-
supplied Stinger missiles.
As the war progressed, the Red Army built a dozen air bases and
brought in turboprop transports, jet fighters and bombers. Armor-
plated helicopters, like the Mi-24, carrying cannon, rockets and
machine guns were used to ambush resistance fighters and carpet-bomb
enemy areas.
In the end, vast technological superiority was not enough to conquer
one of the world’s poorest countries. Mikhail Gorbachev ordered his
troops to withdraw in April 1989.
