LONDON: Amnesty International warned on Monday that human rights abuses
in China could tarnish the 2008 Beijing Olympics and accused games
officials of weakening resolve after initial pledges to tackle concerns.
With a year to go before the start of the games, the human rights group
said in a report that serious violations "constitute an affront to core
principles in the Olympic Charter" relating to human dignity and ethics.
Amnesty has been in touch with the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
but the report said it was "deeply concerned" about their "apparent
reluctance... to take a more proactive stance on human rights issues."
"Indeed, the IOC's initial resolve to 'take action' to ensure that human
rights concerns are addressed appears to have weakened as the Olympic
Games approach," the report said.
