Rattled, Chinese make Olympic security a priority

By Howard W. French
Tuesday, April 1, 2008

SHANGHAI: The Chinese president, Hu Jintao, has ordered his nation's
security forces to place a top priority on the Olympics in August,
saying that the country's international reputation was at stake.

The comments came against a backdrop of increasing Chinese accusations
that Tibetans were planning violent attacks in their quest for increased
autonomy, which the Tibetans deny.

"Security must take priority," Hu was quoted as saying in the People's
Armed Police News, published by China's paramilitary police force.
"Without security guarantees there cannot be a successful Olympic Games,
and without security guarantees the national image will be lost."

The Chinese Saga of Olympic Shame Continues..... Calls for Boycott the
2008 Beijing Olympics!

Boycott the 2008 Beijing Olympics!

The invested interests spend so much national wealth in preparing the
Olympic Games to blandish the international, launch so much propaganda
about the 2008 Olympics to gloss over official corruption and social
inequality!

At the last National People's Congress session, China's Wen wowed
discretionarily for the "Chinese's enthusiasm for the 2008 Olympics" -
ignoring the voices of naysayers.

Many feel the GDP comes from inflation. houses and food are all more
expensive. China is falling into the capitalism seen in the 1800s,
before the October Revolution.

Most recent and upcoming college graduates from all over China squash in
fancy metropolises, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, etc, while other
provinces remain stagnant.

Next spring, Chinese colleges and universities expect a record 4.95
million graduates, up 820,000 from this year. More than a million of
them will wind up jobless, according to estimates.

Groups call on Foreign Mining Companies for immediate withdrawal from Tibet

Dharamsala: Following a riot in Tawu [Ch: Bamei] County in Tibetan area
of Sichuan province last month to Stop a mining company from plundering
a local sacred mountain, Tibetan activist groups from New York and
London have issued a detailed statement earlier on June 15 demanding
foreign mining companies to immediately withdraw from Tibet.

“As long as Tibet remains an occupied territory with no rule of law and
where mineral exploitation is so clearly opposed by local Tibetans, no
mining companies, Chinese or foreign, should be operating there,” says
Lhadon Tethong, Executive Director of Students for a Free Tibet, in the
statement.

According to the statement, Canadian and British firms in particular are
leading the rush to exploit Tibet’s mineral reserves without the consent
of and increasingly in conflict with rural Tibetans living near the
project sites.

Chinese officials are trying to deflect blame for the country’s
pollution onto foreign firms, accusing them of “environmental
colonialism,” experts say. The move follows government concern over
thousands of anti-pollution protests in the past year.

In a December 3 opinion piece in The Washington Post, a leading China
analyst called the effort a “blame game.”

Elizabeth Economy, director for Asia studies at the New York-based
Council on Foreign Relations, said that Chinese officials, the press,
and some activists have charged multinational corporations with
“exporting pollution” by sourcing their products in China and ignoring
environmental rules.
