Suppose the goal is long term control of the open ocean. It seems
clear than in 1914 one should spend money on battleships, and in 1945
one should spend money on aircraft carriers. When was the crossover
point?
-or-
Suppose I had some very large amount of money to spend on ships. At
year 19YY I should have spent the money on battleships, but on year
19YY+1 I should have spent the money on aircraft carriers.
My guess would be early 1930s. By 1939 It seems clear that the
aircraft carrier trumps the battleship. What's your guess?
