It's interesting to read what's only recently come out; the captain
scuttled the ship because he lacked the fuel to escape the British.
Why he did is the kicker...

Didn't one of the British cruisers that fought at River Plate participate in the movie? I
saw the movie some time back when it was on TNT, and it was strange to see U.S.S.
Salem (CA-139) painted up like she was in the Kreigsmarine, and USN sailors dressed up
as Germans.

The part of HMS _Achilles_ was played by INS _Delhi_, formerly HMIS _Delhi_, formerly
HMNZS _Achilles_, formerly HMS _Achilles_.

Think _Georges Averoff_ was classed as a heavy cruiser towards the
end of her service life. She started as an Armoured Cruiser, of
course. Worth a visit, either way (near Athens).

IIRC the movie makers had a lot of trouble with the USN - which
refused to have any Nazi symbols, flags, etc. displayed aboard the
Salem. So whenever one sees the odd swastika it was filmed aboard one
of the British ships. BTW the Cumberland, sadly denuded of its
turrets, also acted itself in the movie.

Plate" JAMAICA played EXETER and SHEFFIELD was AJAX. Captain Bell (the
real EXETER's captain during the battle) was "adviser" to the movie in the ...

Are you sure she wasn't HMS between HMNZS and HMIS? Various vague
sources talk about 'returned to the RN', but was she re-commissioned?
