Re: Some interesting quotes off a site I saw today

The principle, perhaps. But not that exact phrase. Read that link more
carefully, Neal, like this quote from the first paragraph:

"Proponents of spanking quote the adage, "Spare the rod and spoil the
child," as though it were actually scripture from the Bible. In truth,
it is not."

The "In truth, it is not," is exactly what I was saying.

But everybody I talk to says that a "rod" to chasten a child is actually
more like what one these days would call a switch, not like an iron rod
-- something to sting, not to inflict blunt trauma.

And as I have heard from someone who was a professing Christian and also
agree with, parents who use spanking at their prime mode of discipline
are too lazy to "make the punishment fit the crime." My children
learned more as young children about getting along with their siblings
by the "hug therapy" I enforced on them (had to sit on the sofa for a
certain number of minutes with their arms around each others shoulders
peacefully and then hug each other and tell each other they loved them,
starting each day at one minute for the first offense and adding another
minute for each subsequent offense in the same day) than they ever would
have if I had spanked them.

  Happy Holidays to All

Author: Rae
Date: Dec 24, 2008 14:05

I know it's been pretty quiet in here lately, but just want to wish
you all a Happy Holiday and best wishes for a prosperous New Year. Our
Christmas will be white for sure. We had about 16 inches of snow a few
days ago. I've been snowshoeing in the woods, then riding my horse
through the snow, even getting brave enough (soft landing zone) to
ride on a bareback pad and drop the stirrups! What fun and it keeps my
bum warm in this freezing weather we've been having.

We'll have a quiet holiday. Going out for Chinese tonight (about only
place that is open), and DH has to work tomorrow!

Anne - Glad you didn't have much damage. I hate to see Kemah and
Seabrook destroyed like that though. I went to school in Kemah and
Seabrook both when I was a kid. Carla destroyed them in 1961 but they
built back. The Kemah Boardwalk was a fun place to go to.

Recognized a lot of the building in the video you made. Have no fear -
they will rebuild.

  I'm back

Author: Barbara Carlson

Finally over with my surgery and back home with my new hip. I'm so far
behind in my work I haven't had chance to try to find out what has been
happening here.

I am really quite upset about my hospital stay, though. It's been about 10
and 11 years since my last joint replacements (both knees, and left hip) and
I could not believe how the standard of care has deteriorated. Not only is
health care more expensive, but it is nowhere near as good as it was then.
I'm glad to be home!

Can I deduct from my age now, since only part of me will be 75 in December!

Anne, I'm so glad to know all is okay. As someone who has been there I was
thinking of you while I was in the hospital, so glad to know you're okay.

I'm looking for ideas here. We had a young man call our volunteer line from
a hospital in Germany; he's looking for his parents who live here in
Seabrook and has been unable to contact them. His uncle has been by their
house and says no-one's there. I've contacted the Red Cross, and they're
not registered with, what's the program called, Safe and Well, I believe it
is. I gave him the number of our local police department to contact (yeah,
they're going to love me, I know), and I've got his parents' address and
phone number (voicemail box is full, I already checked), and I'll go by
there myself when I have a chance, but in the meantime, can anyone think of
any other avenue we haven't covered? It's been 10 days since the storm, and
this guy has to be frantic, although he sounded...
