Mathematics (High Level) Resources Like Books and Web Sites

Author: Richard1111D
Date: Jan 31, 2008 23:19

Greetings.

I am looking for a math book(s) or web site that just explains topics
and how they are applied mathematics . An example might be, "Taylor
Series is used for estimating . . . This is useful in X, Y, and Z
applications".

I have hunted the Internet and local libraries to no avail.

A little history on me in case it helps the group understand my need.
I graduated from college approx. 10 yrs ago and have forgotten many of
the details of my math courses. I have a comp. sci background, and I
am currently a Software Engineer. I am just starting to use Matlab
for certain modeling I must do on a new software project I am working
on.

Thank you.

Respectfully,

Richard

Does the square root of 2 ring any bells?

Why the Hessian has its name?

Author: Weintraub
Date: Jan 31, 2008 22:58

Quick question...

I know that the Hessian matrix is the square matrix of the second-
order partial derivatives of a function, but am confused as to how it
got its name. If anyone could explain why it is named the Hessian
matrix that would be very appreciated. Thanks for the help

  Simple analysis question.

Suppose that for all e>0, there exists N such that

for arbitrary n_1, n_2, ..., n_k > N, | a(n_1) + a(n_2) + ... + a(n_k)
| < e.
((cf) n_i , and i are both arbitrary.)

Then sum{a_n} converges absolutely.

I can easily prove the inverse statement... but I can't get this.

Help this stupid guy ;(

  JSH: Now a Case Study

JSH behavior is now case study in PDF

==> is the following a real JSH post ??

Saturday, July 20, 1996

Last apologies. Last post here.

I realized just now just how seriously I abused the helpfulness and kindness
of people from this newsgroup and at colleges and universities around the
country, as well as AMS editors.

I'm posting this because I know that many of them may happen to see this.

I can't send email to them directly because I was forced to throw away all
of their addresses to stop from emailing. In a way I guess this post is just
more of the same silliness but oh well.

Having spent a lifetime learning high-pressure sales techniques: I was
brought up as a Jehovah's Witness (I'm no longer one) and having read books
on sales and psychology since I was about ten years old, I know all of the
tools and techniques (I still fall for them myself which might explain my
past, now permanently lapsed Amway distributorship).

  Re: Abolish Fractions?

Interestingly I had this discussion a few days ago with a professor
specializing in Math Ed.

I tend to think that we should keep fractions. After all, that is how
the Greek's defined non-integers (as ratios of two integers rather than
points on a number line).

My personal experience is that the best way to get good answers to these
kinds of questions is to ask professors from departments for whom math
is a service requirement. This includes economics, physics,
engineering. It is surprising the extent that these people really
prefer the traditional teaching approach, and the extent that they want
the courses to teach basic math skills rather than applications.
