  Shell external skin

Author: pbocchini
Date: Aug 29, 2008 07:07

Hi,
I am doing a FEA using shell elements, described by means of their
external skin. However, the code (Adina) considers the input geometry
as the midsurface of the element.

I have heard that some codes (Ansys?) take into account also the
possibility to set the described geometry as bottom or top skin of the
element. What do they change in these cases? Isn't the volume of the
shell computed anyway as area times thickness? And what about the
stiffness? Do they perform a sort of offset to shift the properties to
the midsurface?

Could anybody clarify these points to me?

Thanks in advance,
Paolo

Release of the Surrogate Modeling (SUMO) Toolbox v6.0

Author: Tom Dhaene
Date: Aug 11, 2008 02:49

We are proud to announce the 6.0 release of the SUrrogate MOdeling
(SUMO)
Toolbox.

[*] The SUMO Toolbox is a Matlab toolbox that automatically generates
a
surrogate model (= a metamodel, an approximation model) for a given
data
source (a simulation code, data set, Matlab function, ...) within the
predefined accuracy, sample budget, and time limits set by the user.
It
will automatically drive your simulation code generating an
approximation
model (ANN, SVM, rational function, RBF model, ...) that is as
accurate
as possible, using as little data points as possible (since these are
usually expensive).

  Column:Axial stiffness vs bending stiffness

Author: kajalschopra
Date: Aug 6, 2008 13:38

Consider a column.

1) As the bending moemnt incraeses (keeping axial force
constant);bending stiffness "EI" reduces.

2) My question is that what is the effect if reducing "EI" on axial
stiffness "AE/l" (AE)

3) Should we reduce "AE" too?If so what amount?

Can we neglect the change in "AE" due to reducing "EI"

The following link introduces a finite element method for evaluation of
in-situ stiffness and mass

Are there other methods developed? Thanks.
