  Ethanol and politics...

Author: jtnospam
Date: Jun 30, 2008 21:56

The general rule of American politics is that the oil companies
except
for Occidental Petroleum (Armand Hammer's old outfit) are Republican,
and the major food processors (ADM, Conagra, Union Camp, etc.) are
Democrat companies that suck off the teat of the Farm Bills and
Agriculture Dept., and return the money to their respective parties
in
campaign money and cushy jobs for their retired politicians after
they
leave office, or essentially a bribe on the installment plan.
For decades, the US gov't issued massive subsidies for the"big
five",
corn (maize to the rest of the world), soybeans, wheat, rice, and
cotton. There started to be problems when the anti-subsidy rules of
the WTO worked against this system, and the UN anti-poverty people
complained that 3rd world farmers couldn't compete and make a living.
The final nail in the coffin was the development of genetically
modified crops, which were stupendously efficient but banned in many
countries. The solution was corn-based ethanol, a way to subsidize
midwestern agribusiness (and with it, politicians) by burning it out ...

Times of London: 8 years to disaster

From The Times of London

June 30, 2008

Former President Bush energy adviser says oil is running out
Robin Pagnamenta, Energy and Environment Editor

The era of globalisation is over and rocketing energy prices mean the
world is poised for the re-emergence of regional economies based on
locally produced goods and services, according to a former energy
adviser to President Bush and the pioneer of the “peak oil” theory.

Matt Simmons, chief executive of Simmons & Company, a Houston energy
consultancy, said that global oil production had peaked in 2005 and
was set for a steep decline from present levels of about 85 million
barrels per day. “By 2015, I think we would be lucky to be producing
60 million barrels and we should worry about producing only 40
million,” he told The Times.

His controversial views, rejected by many mainstream experts, suggest
that some of the world's biggest oilfields, particularly in Kuwait and
those of Saudi Arabia, the world's leading producer, are in decline.
“It's just the law of numbers,” he said. “A lot of these oilfields are
40 years old. Once they roll over, they roll over very fast.”

Re: Converting CO2 and H2O to Methane

Yo, Pixor,
if it would not have been for the miserable Green Shits,
those mother fucking enviros, who obstructed the
development of nuclear power for the last 40 years
and precipitated the current oil crisis AND caused the
Global Warming, which these enviro turds whine about,
then your hope for "Converting CO2 and H2O to Methane"
would be a possible industrial endeavor by now.
>
In the late 60's, the Sci. Mags and the Patent Office had
plenty of proposals to do that. Your Scheme was/is simple:
Split CO2 thermally into CO + 1/2 O2 and the H2O into
H2 + 1/2 O2 via electrolysis, both powered by energy from
the nuke plants. The CO & O2 was purported to be separated
by mass spectrographic means, or selectively absorbed to
avoid recombination.
The resulting gas mix, CO + H2, is known as Synthesis Gas,
from which via the Fischer Tropsch reaction, CH4 and all
other Hydrocarbons, from Methane to Alcohols to Diesel
can and have been synthesized on a industrial scale. ...

  Saving firewood for next winter...

Author: jtnospam

The democrats won't allow drilling in the OCS or oilshale, in favor of
some dreamy utopia that is decades away at best. My concern is how to
keep my family warm next winter. I've contacted landscaping companies
and arborists for firewood (the original biofuel) supplies, luckily I
have a cast iron stove in the family room. Heating oil will be as
uaffordable as other petroleum products, so we're going to close off
most of the house and move family members to the center of the house
where the stove is to stay warm. Picking up wool blankets at the local
thrift stores, I recommend others do the same, we will get no relief
from this Congress, time to throw the bums out.-Jitney

On June 8th I started a thread "Zubrin on Energy Victory" with the
post reproduced below. Unfortunately, the discussion was sidetracked
nto a silly debate over the condition of the polar bear populations at
the North Pole.

We are facing a serious problem that will soon be a crisis that may,
unless averted, take our civillization back two hundred years and
shrink the population to that level through mass starvation. Let's be
serious, folks.

Herewith is my attempt to continue a serious discussion about Zubrin's
ideas to save civilization:

-------

Robert Zubrin was on CSPAN2 this morning with a talk about his book
"Energy Victory," which I have read before. But his talk crystalized
his message into a brief form that I will try to reproduce from
memory. He also has a website: energyvictory.net.

Conservation of energy "against us or for us if we wish"?

Author: Spaceman

Todays technology lacks a lot of conservational techniques
that could be included to harness more energy than ever before
from the same source we use already.

Lets take a real simple version of hydroelectric power generation.
The water falls and turns a turbine to create power.
Lets say the water falling is producing 100kwatts when it finally
flows away down...
