  CD Burning with High Voltage

Vid of HV supply burning a CD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNIDfZxIT0w&feature=related

Is this a good example of creepage?

Coollll how the arc jumps around. I guess it strives for the path of
least resistance.
If the arc eats in too far, it jumps to a better conduction path.

After the sparks stop, there is still power.
Yet the rest of the CD doesn't burn..
The carbon track is more conductive than the remaining metal?
Does molten polycarbonate conduct?
Or perhaps the carbon track (from decomposed polycarbonate) is loading
the HV supply..
Dunno..whatever...just some cheapo HV entertainment.

McCain Stands By Nutty Pastor Who Calls Catholic Church "The Great Whore"...

John Hagee's McCain Endorsement Sparks Uproar

ABC reports:
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/02/hagee-endorseme.html

Calling Pastor John Hagee a "bigot," the conservative Catholic League
is calling for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to denounce/renounce/reject
his endorsement Wednesday.

With a Youtube link to prove his point, Catholic League president Bill
Donohue said Hagee "has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic
Church.

For example, he likes calling it 'The Great Whore,' an 'apostate
church,' the 'anti-Christ,' and a 'false cult system.' ..."Senator
Obama has repudiated the endorsement of Louis Farrakhan, another
bigot.

McCain should follow suit and retract his embrace of Hagee." ...

McCain spox Jill Hazelbaker says, "Hagee endorsed John McCain. While
we welcome his support, it shouldn't be seen as a wholesale
endorsement of all of Mr. Hagee's views."

  SMD Electrolytics

Author: D from BC

I was looking for a 2.2uF 100V electrolytic cap and ....there's no SMD
version available from Digikey??
Also, seems like many electrolytics are through hole.

I guess the pads probably rip off with G shock.

I've been converting throughhole components to 'quasi-SMD'. I use glue
gun glue, silicone, big pads and kinky lead bending. What a pita...

How about an adhesive under the capacitor that melts during plate
soldering? That way the capacitor is fastened to the pcb.

Wouldn't it be nice if every component were SMD?

7th grader needs help with electronics design project

Author: okennedy

I have a 7th grader who has an idea that I am unable to help her
build. She wants to make an alarm clock for which the alarm can only
be turned off using a remote (preferably wireless) controller. I feel
I can help her assembe the components; I just can't figure out what
parts are needed. I am completely overwhelmed when I look through the
electronics catalogs and haven't been able to find assistance at hobby
or electronics shops. Is anyone able/willing to help me develop a
parts list?

  More circuits to simulate

Author: Scott Ronald
Date: Feb 29, 2008 13:00

Hi

I need to simulate a basic boost regulator like:

[Vin]-------[inductor]---|----------[diode]----|-------[output]
| | |
| [control]--[mosfet] [capacitor]
| | |
|----------------------|---------------------|

So I was thinking of splitting into 2 sections: one for the on state and
one for the off-state.

On State:
[Vin]-------[inductor]-----|---------------------|------------|
| | | |
| / [capacitor] [Load]
| / | |
|------------------------|---------------------|------------|

Thanks to John Larkin here on sci.electronics.design I already have the
code to do the on state:

  Again on ADSL line

Author: Epsilon Rho
Date: Feb 29, 2008 12:29

A few weeks ago I posted a message regarding some problems with my ADSL
line. Following the intervention of the AT&T technician, the line is now OK.
In an effort to understand the original problem (a mismatch between the Ring
and Tip impedance) I measured again such impedances. Now that everything
seems to be operating properly, I measured approx. 2,200 ohm (DC) on the Tip
and on the Ring line. I know that at the central office (CO) there is a 200
ohm resistance, so each wire resistance should be 2,000 ohm. AT&T told me
that they cannot upgrade the speed to my location because I am too far from
the CO. I learned that this distance is 18,000 feet.

Armed with these numbers, I tried to calculate how far I am from the CO. And
this is what is puzzling. Assuming that I am at 18,000 feet away, the AWG
that would give a reading of 2,000 ohm at 18,000 feet is pegged at around
30-31 AWG and that is impossible, because this kind of gauge is far too thin
for a phone line. As a matter of fact, I read that the smallest AWG used in
the phone line is 24 AWG.

Has anybody an idea of what is going on?

TIA

Gene
