Crypto contamination closes Lake Parker in Tarrant County, Texas

Author: Gordon Burditt
Date: Jul 24, 2008 21:05

Due to fears that Lake Parker has been contaminated with crypto,
the lake has been closed. Swimming pools in Arlington are also
being closed for a day while they are being given a triple-normal
dose of chlorine to kill the crypto and any other bugs that may
have contaminated them. Symptoms of crypto include diarrhea.

Gee, do you think we could have any more NSA fear-mongering over
the private use of cryptography?

Oh, you mean cryptosporin isn't a cipher algorithm? Never mind.

Good News! Software Patents are in Jeopardy

I have a played the Patent game got one while working for Uncle Sam.
But I notice many
people are afraid to write code because of patents. And in the
computer world there are
many patents that don't make cents. Neither does this post but check
out u tube
you will either like it or hate it.

Extent of Usage of a Key

Author: WTShaw
Date: Jul 24, 2008 14:13

5) Key Usage as a aspect of strength refers to the amount of a
specific key that is actually used. A flawed DES commandment was to
work the key info as hard as possible and use all of it. I said
faulty because otherwise with a better designed algorithm if with a
specific encryption only part of the key is used, then with another
encryption with the same key a different extraction of key information
would take place, and likely much of the key could remain elusive.

With a huge keyspace and huge amount of key data that might be used
with any particular encryption using a chosen key, the chances that
all or even a meaningful part of that data could be recovered might be
minimized. This all ties in with the section on problematic
encryption because the idea is to present as big a problem as possible
for an attacker who tries to make sense of what he has. Better
strength means doing this well.

If the algorithm used is RC4-drop(768) RC4-drop(3072), or RC4-drop(65536)
(See http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hopwood/crypto/scan/cs.html#RC4-drop )
You will need at least a 2GB ciphertext (multiple 1GB ciphertexts are
not sufficient) before you can distinguish the ciphertext from random.
