  FYI - Crypto and the right to privacy

Author: David Eather
Date: May 3, 2008 17:20

Just found something interesting....

As many of you know, parts of the US government are not keen on citizens
hanging on to their privacy by using crypto. When it comes to legality
of invading this privacy the arguments "pro" generally centre on there
being no right to privacy in the US constitution.

Therefore something I found yesterday may become interesting ....

"In the 1973 case, Roe v. Wade, the United States Supreme Court
struck down state laws banning abortion, ruling that such laws violated
an implied right to privacy in the United States Constitution"

  All About The Quran

Author: hamada
Date: May 3, 2008 15:22

The Quran is a Divine Miracle of Literature [Prophesy - Science -
Warnings - Wisdom - Truths] ..and it has been Preserved 100%% In the
Original Language - for over 1,400 years!

Humanity has received Divine Guidance only through two channels:

the Word of Almighty God ("Allah" [in Arabic]) [scriptures, Bible,
Psalms, etc.]
the Prophets sent by the Allah to communicate His Will to mankind

These two things have always been going together, hand in hand.

More important though, there were at that time, tens of thousands of
his companions ("sahabi" in Arabic) who memorized the complete Quran
from the instruction of the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. Even
the prophet himself, peace be upon him, used to recite it while angel
Gabriel once a year and in the last year of his life he recited it two
times just before the month in which he died.

  Erratum in NIST SP800-67?

Author: Richard Outerbridge
Date: May 3, 2008 08:44

To Whom It May Concern:

I believe I have found an error in NIST ITL SP800-67 (Recommendation for
the Triple Data Encryption Algorithm (TDEA) Block Cipher), Version 1,
which is available at:

<http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/nistpubs/800-67/SP800-67.pdf>

On page 14 of SP800-67, in Section 3.4.2 Weak Keys, is a list of the four
"Weak Keys" of the DEA. The published list is as follows:

* 0000000 0000000

* 0000000 FFFFFFF

* FFFFFFF 0000000

* FFFFFFF FFFFFFF

This list is in ERROR. It should probably read:

* 00000000 00000000

* 1F1F1F1F 0E0E0E0E <=!

* E0E0E0E0 F1F1F1F1 <=!

* FFFFFFFF FFFFFFFF

Since,

Fact: { 0x01010101, 0xfefefefe } and { 0xfefefefe, 0x01010101 } are NOT
weak DEA keys.

  JSH: It's a puzzle

Author: JSH
Date: May 2, 2008 21:54

I have to solve the problem and I'm running out of time. You all are
part of a massive puzzle that I'm trying to unscramble and if I don't
then nasty things happen, but more and more it looks like if I do,
nasty things happen.

Part of the problem seems to be a natural conflict between evolution
and civilization.

Civilization makes it easier for more people to survive, while
evolution works best by killing off those who make stupid mistakes, so
there is a continual battle of evolution against stability, without
which humanity wouldn't exist as it would never have evolved.

Counter pressure against evolution seems to explain people like George
W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

Their mistakes somehow don't matter. It has little impact on their
survivability, but in a situation where mistakes don't matter, then
negative memes can flourish until they reach a catastrophic tipping
point, and stupidity once again causes death, and then evolution kicks
in again with a vengeance.

  How about a server-side message with NO HMAC?

Author: zhangyuan.cau
Date: May 2, 2008 20:40

I have just adopted a secure protocol for a distributed multi-player
game from TLS/SSl,in which 1000+ players act in the same world. The
Question is about the Hashed-MAC field in its message format.

The protocol works much like SSL/TLS. Firstly "Hello", secondly
"Shake-Hand"and "RSA Public Key",then "Pre-Master Secret" and "Cipher
Algorithm Changed",at last comes the "Encrypted Game Msg".

The Format of "Encrypted Game Msg" includes
[1]Length
[2]Encrypted content
[3]Encrypted Hashed-MAC
[4]Encrypted Padding etc.
The protocol is symmetric:both client and server will generate and
send Hashed-MAC in 16 bytes.

  JSH: No simple answer then?

Author: JSH
Date: May 2, 2008 17:55

I posted as part of the initial brainstorming process about the oddity
of high search rankings for topics related to my postings on my blogs
versus low hit counts for those blogs as reported by Google Analytics
and now Quantcast.

The issue here is not getting a lot of hits but an apparent
contradiction, where, for instance, last time I checked in Google
(just now): definition mathematical proof--brings up a page on my math
blog at number five.

And in Google: define mathematical proof--brings up that page at
number six.

I put those search strings that way to indicate that quotes are NOT to
be used.

Google says there are 542,000 search results for that last search
string, where my page comes up number six. But according to Google
Analytics that page has received 33 hits in the past 30 days. And 3
hits today and 3 hits yesterday.

One early hypothesis I've come up with as I've begun brainstorming
this problem is that there are two different data streams, as in there
MUST be two different data streams to get such different results.
