I learned, when once besieged by large black ants, that ants will swim
in tap water, but die in seconds in alcohol. Accordingly, I wiped out
the column by picking them up one by one by hand and dropping them
into a jar of alcohol (oh yes... they were too hard to crush with your
fingers -- and obviously they didn't bite effectively).
